Bonus payments get a cash-asset exemption
A cash-asset exemption changes for bonus payments under social security rules.
Social Security (Cash Asset Exemption—Bonus Payments) Amendment Regulations 2026
What's changing
- Bonus Payment Programme lump-sum payments will not count as cash assets for 12 months after payment.
- This exemption will apply when checking eligibility for assistance that depends on the accommodation supplement cash-asset test.
- Two references in the social security rules will be updated to match changes made in 2025.
Who's affected
People who receive a Bonus Payment Programme lump-sum payment and whose assistance eligibility depends on the accommodation supplement cash-asset test may be affected.
When
The changes come into force on 20 October 2026.
Background
The government says the changes are intended to ensure these lump-sum payments do not count as cash assets for the first 12 months. They also update references to reflect the 2025 changes to the Social Security Act.
