What's changing
- A vehicle licence will be an electronic record, so displaying a physical licence will no longer be required.
- Vehicle owners may choose to display a vehicle licence label as extra evidence.
- Electronic licensing information will override any conflicting vehicle licence label.
- Licence applications will ask whether the applicant wants a vehicle licence label.
Who's affected
People who register, license, or use motor vehicles, and people who display or manage vehicle licence labels, will be affected.
When
These changes come into force on 1 March 2027.
What you might need to do
- When applying for a vehicle licence, indicate whether you want a vehicle licence label.
- If you choose a label, display it as required by the regulations.
Background
The government is changing the system so a vehicle’s licence is recorded and evidenced electronically. The regulations remove rules that treated a licence displayed on a vehicle as the main evidence of licensing.
